For starters we now have 8kids, only have a small cow family and 2horses (yes I am aware that I was the one totally opposed to getting horses since they didn't fit into the 4M's). I wish I could go into all that has happened but I will say this, thank you to all those who prayed for us and continue to do so.

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Eva (Treva and Lot's baby) is all grown up and has given birth to her own little heifer, Lulua. Dh found us a little bull, after we unsuccessfully tried to rent/borrow one for over a year, on the radio no less, lol. We named him Adam, he came from a purebred longhorn herd and apparently his mama liked to sneak out at night, his sire is the neighbors bull and since he isn't a longhorn, Adam was a reject (at least to them). Thankfully he was the perfect size for our little Eva, God took care of the details :)

<div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

AR has taken control of much of the daily chores now that DH is working more. We were able to teach Eva to milk in the last few days and she has been doing a wonderful job. Lulua is with mama all day and is doing very well.

Cricket is a wonderful little quarter horse we got as the previous owners were out of hay, she is a joy and the middle kids are having a blast riding her. She enjoys being ridden without a saddle but also doesn't mind being saddled. Naveah, was given to us by a neighbor who is currently boarding her other horses here. She is very much the Type A personality but she doesn't scare Cricket. The cows however aren't nearly as thrilled with the new horse arrangement though. As soon as things warm up a bit they will be in separate areas but for now they are all learning to play nice ;)

In addition to all the other changes on the farm I have actively resumed my weight loss journey. I am not following any one plan too strictly as they all seem to have a bit that doesn't quite work for me so I keep tweaking the way I eat to find the right combo. I have enjoyed participating in my first dietbet last month and I plan to do another this month. For those not familiar with dietbet it is a "game" where you bet on you, basically that you will lose 4%body weight within 28days. For anyone looking for a little extra motivation, I encourage you to give it a try.
I sure missed you guys, I'd love to hear what you've been up to these last 16months :) God Bless.
Dh, AR and I disbudded Bella, we hope we did the job right so far it looks good. They are getting ready to be properly weaned in another few weeks.

There's not much to tell, our tomatoes and potatoes didn't make it (thanks blister beetles). We're hoping the pumpkins do well. The pigs are staying cool and we should have babies next month and the month after.

Hopefully Eva will get bred soon, we will likely send pretty to the freezer along with patches. I hope to get some jam done next week but we'll see how it goes.

Dh finally took his vacation time and AR went to FL, it was an awesome time for all of us to get a break. We start school on Monday and are really refreshed and excited. Summer vacation is almost over and it feels like only yesterday it began. Hope you had a great summer :)

I LOVE MY WELL, it saves me so much that it is wonderful.

As you know we are having a drought in this part of the world, not good if you're in need hay or produce hay. I am not a fan of hay farming, frankly it seems way too uncertain but I'm chicken that way. I am however a HUGE fan of haying your own property and selling excess when it is profitable.

Thanks to the drought, those who have hay have a great opportunity to enter the cattle market if they want to. Cattle prices are crashing as finding affordable hay is almost impossible. Hay producers are estimating that they will only be able to have 1/3 of what they usually get. The prices are soaring as a result and people are getting desperate. People are getting very hot under the collar about the higher prices but consider even if they were to double the usual price for hay they will not make what they usually would. (If they are used to getting 3000 bales and selling for $1 they would have $3000 by the end of the season, this year they are getting 1000 bales being sold for $2, giving them $2000 by the end of the season. Believe me they aren't happy about this drought either.)

Anyway, the point is this is a perfect example of an area of diversity that each small farm needs to investigate to achieve sustainability. Even if all you are able to do is feed your own livestock you would be ahead of the game and be able to build up your beef breeding/butcher stock.

My dh is a car's worst nightmare (love you honey). The poor car hit 2 deer and too many other little critters to mention and we hadn't even owned it for 6 months. Even after all that it still continued to run until it finally had enough, I mean how long is it supposed to run without enough clean oil or coolant? Dh is much like Wayne Szalinski, in that he is single minded in his purpose and the whole world can fall down around him or in this case the car, before he notices something is wrong. Anyway, he's working on it so hopefully he'll work it into his routine.

Well what do you do with a car that doesn't run and isn't going to be fixed? You can always strip it for parts, but who has that kind of time? You can try to sell it, but that is also quite a bother, who wants a wrecked car? For us the solution came in the form of a company called Kellycarbuyer.com (this is NOT a paid promotion or advertisement). I stumbled across an ad for them as I had several other and having heard the most absurd low-ball offers I was prepared for more of the same when they called. WOW was I wrong and did they make it easy. Now I live out in the boonies and their Kansas person was not able to help me but they were still willing to work with me and given my proximity to Oklahoma I was able to work with their Oklahoma buyer.

Thanks to the money they paid us (plus the little we had saved) we were able to buy another car almost immediately. It's not pretty but it runs and gets great mileage and wouldn't you know it (God and his humor again), He sent it in our theme colors, LOL!!! We have a little Toyota Camry and it even has a towing package, something I had wanted and hadn't even expected. Everything in His time, right on time :) Praise God.

In other news the pigs are doing great, the chicks and chickens are wonderful and the cows are getting big. It's time to get our little Eva bred and I'm very excited to see what her baby will look like. God Bless and try to stay cool this summer :)
Since making this decision we have learned quite a lot about breeding pigs, for instance they are fed 4-7lbs of grain per day so that they don't get too fat. Turns out that if they get too fat it can make it hard for them to get pregnant and if they do get pregnant it can make the birth difficult. I cannot tell you how many questions we've asked over the last few days to breeders from Indiana to Texas. I am impressed by how friendly and willing to help most seem and it really is heart warming to see how passionate they all are about their pigs. A great resource we have also found is showpig.com oh and WOW the AI world of pigs is amazing, people pay a small fortune for the "right" genetics. Well, right now we're playing the waiting game since we lost our boar we will be looking to see if the sows come into heat over these next couple days. They were AI'd last month but she was not certain if it took. We have a line on several boars at this point and we are looking at some options for the pork side of the business too. Ahh, so much to do, so little time.

For the past week temperatures have spiked hitting 104 and feeling even hotter, my poor pigs could hardly cool down fast enough to keep up, the ground drank the water rather than making mud. By the end of the weekend we had lost 1 sow and the boar and with temperatures continuing to rise and winds high, all we could do was move them away from the other animals.

Dh contacted the rendering plant yesterday but we discovered that they do not take pigs, only cattle and horses. Today I began to search for options and thankfully the Farm Bureau came through with options. It's something you ever really want to think about but it is part of this life and knowing your options sure helps. Dh and AR are working on a fire pit of sorts and we will incinerate the bodies. I pray it goes well and that we will never have to do it again. :( Thankfully we have been able to keep the other 2 sows comfortable and Praise the Lord, the temperatures this week are much milder.
We got a GREAT deal as she wanted them to stay together. Dh and I have converted the corrals to a summer pig pen. We also picked up a truck bed trailer and a riding lawn mower, all were priced for us far below market, I firmly believe they were God's blessings on us.

WichitaIt's not you, it's me. Actually it's dh, he's getting tired of the frequent trips so I'm cutting WAY back. Given the current gas prices I agree but I'll miss you. I won't miss the long drive or long lines or getting lost but your treasures (we got a free shed and bricks, Menards had 20inch bikes for 19.99 after rebate - we need 1 more so now all kids have bikes), places to go and eat. Well It's not quite goodbye, I will see you again. :)

The kids and I went down to Dallas last weekend and had a blast celebrating my birthday and Memorial day with my mom and sister's family. It was so great to get out of town for a bit, the kids and I had such a great time. It may seem crazy taking 7 kids on a road trip alone but we had fun. Here are a few pics

The quality alone is like night and day. That said don't forget to always check the remnants sections to see if there is a piece you can use and save a few bucks :)

The contractor has still not shown up for the siding project so I contacted someone else. Unlike the other contractor he put it on me to source the materials, I really had not thought much about it so imagine my surprise when I realized that the other guy was charging 4 times the actual cost of the materials :( God is great and all to often works things out even when you don't realize that He is. :)

The kids and I will be prepping the wall, getting out all the nails and screws and bagging up all the melted siding and insulation and hopefully should have it ready for the guys to start on Wednesday.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE Craigslist? I do :) I found some great chainlink fencing for the new chicken/goat area for $20 :) The kids and I picked it up on our trip to Menards, love them too. We were able to find the siding for the house at a much lower price than the other hardware stores :) Dh might even consider doing the siding work himself if he can figure it out :)

I found 2 remnants that should allow me to re-do my bedroom. I also found a 12X17 remnant for the kitchen. I will have to go look for a few more soon. I was pleased to see that Menards also sells used appliances, I think we'll have to take a trailer on the next trip :) So many projects so little time.

Now to most people this sounds like a terrible thing but for a non-vaxing family like ours this is a chance to give our children a lifetime immunity. So we were thrilled to find out the day after the party that one of the kids had it. For the last 2 weeks the kids have asked when they would get the chicken "pops", I am almost certain they thought it was some kind of treat, lol. So far the youngest 4 have gotten it and except for GH (who is covered with it), it has been fairly mild, thank the Lord. We kept EE home the first day to check with the doctor in town. We were informed that unless she was running a temp or had pocks that she was fine to go to school. She was thrilled to be able to go.

Mother's day kicked off the first day of our 3 day celebration, Gh turned 2 Monday and Dh also celebrate his birthday. It wasn't anything fancy but we had fun :)

We have begun working on next years curriculum, I am not a fan of a long summer break so we school all year. The kids are using Teaching Textbooks for math, Switched on Schoolhouse for Language Arts, Science and Spanish. I am still undecided on the social studies curriculum so I will keep looking. They are really enjoying the work and I sit with them to help explain and guide them through the work. I like both programs as it allows me a way to keep a record of their work.

On Monday we had the pleasure of having dinner at Tracy's home and it was like being at home in my grandmother's house. The house was beautiful, it was so cozy and comfortable, there was a loved in/lived in feeling. The kids really enjoyed being there, there was so much to see and AR even found a great tree to climb.

Steven is so knowledgeable about gardening and the animals, I was blown away. I have so much to learn. He is doing such a great job with their property, I hope to get ours that well run someday. We felt so blessed to spend the evening with them. The kids want to go back soon :)

In other news, my grandmother's house was demolished, I don't know why it hit me so hard but I cried. I can see it in my mind so vividly, I can't believe it's not there anymore. :(

Well recital season has come and gone and soccer season is coming to an end. Here are a few pics from the recital :

Yesterday was that day and man was it packed!

En route to Wichita we stopped at a smaller city to pick up some table cloths for the new table. She had 4 priced at what it would have cost me for 1 and they were all brand new, still in the package. :) The woman selling them had just had her last child of 9 get married, she informed us that we should prepare to be broke forever having so many daughters, thanks ::rolls eyes::

The next stop was less productive as the guy didn't have the item that he had advertised :( But no matter it made for a great pit stop to feed the baby :)

Next up was to return my elliptical as the console kept dying, I had checked online and found a store that had the upgraded model, but wouldn't you know it they were out when we got there :( We got the money back and went to Lowes which was just down the street.

I am not sure if I have mentioned how much I love Lowes, the employees are SO knowledgeable that it makes a call or trip so worth it. We are planning a mini grey water system and the guy there was able to help dh find all that he needed to get it done. They discussed all the logistics and offered a few insights that we hadn't considered. I really like those guys :)

While dh did that I spent time calling all the walmarts in the area, there are like 5 or so. I HATE calling walmart but it was necessary, I needed my elliptical :) After being hung up on and on hold for what seemed like forever I FINALLY found what I was looking for. It was on the west side of town, a minor hiccup as the rest of our stops were on the east side.

The great thing about Wichita is that you can get to anywhere from anywhere. I mis read the directions and we ended up on the wrong highway but that was ok as it put us on the west side and a few exits later we connected perfectly with the highway we were supposed to be on and we were once again on our way.

It was refreshing to see that even in the city neighbors look out for each other, as we pulled up the neighbor across the street called to make sure everything was alright. We picked up a BEAUTIFUL cultured marble double sink for our bathroom and he even threw in a kitchen sink. That was a total God thing as I have been looking at kitchen sinks for a while. For the price I was going to pay for the kitchen sink I ended up with 2 and let me tell you, that marble sink is HEAVY!!!! I am so excited to get it in :)

Our last stop was not nearly as simple as it seemed. The guy lived east of a town 2 towns east of the city and we got SO lost. Not even the lady at the gas station could figure out where it was. I called and he gave us some directions and we were kept driving and couldn't find it. I said to dh we will be turning around at the next turn and I called the guy and he said we had actually gone too far. But that exit was perfect as it was less than 5 miles from his house. He was able to direct us perfectly from that point.

There was only 1 thing we were unable to get to but it's still on the list (as it has been for a while). We finally got home after 9 long hours in the van and dh headed out to deliver the newspapers. All in all it was a really great trip and the money saved was awesome. We were even able to save money on gas as we used our .20 cents off per gallon at dillons on the way there. :) Did you know that Dillons allows up to $1 off per gallon? We will be doing all our grocery shopping there from now on. :)

I finished the 2 benches for the new table and the sander arrived today so we will begin the sanding and stain process very soon. The sub floor for the kitchen is going down very well and I know what I want for the flooring so I will be on the look out for a good sale. :)

Well that's all I've got for now, we have skipped spring planting this year but hope to get some done eventually. So many projects, so little time :)

"Many biological studies support a link between mercury and autism, but these Danish studies have been used to suppress further research into thimerosal. With clear evidence of Dr. Thorsen's lack of ethics, it is imperative to reopen this investigation." From August to October of 2003, three articles on the autism-mercury controversy were published in close succession, all of which used data from a Danish registry for psychiatric research to assess the relationship between autism trends and the use of thimerosal.
